Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff comes to Cork for the first time!
Jimmy Cliff was excellent last night at the Savoy. This guy is one of the most important reggae figures of them all and his role and involvement in "The Harder They Come" helped spread the already well known reggae stars name across the world at the start of the 70's. This paved the way for everyone from Bob Marley to Lee Perry to make inroads Woirldwide and it led to reggaes massive influence over popular culture in the last 30 years. Jimmy is now well into his 60's but he is still an amazing performer with incdredible energy. His band were amazing too and the eager crowd in Savoy were delighted with the show.
We went out for a few drinks with Dwight and some other members of the band afterwards and they told us how Red Bull and Guinness is there favourite combination when they party! "It make you go boom boom with ya gal all night mon"; nice one for the tip lads but i'll pass. Amazingly for Jamaican reggae stars none of the band smoke "the herb", which could also explain the high energy levels and boundless enthusiasm! We headed over to the Crane Lane Theatre which has recently been opened by Benny McCabe.I know Benny for years and I remember years ago when he had left school early and opened his first bar in Snotty Joes. He has come along way since then and learnt his trade well. His new bar is superb and i've been well impressed with the old skool vibe of the place on my few vists so far. I wish him all the best with it. You catch Ron Sexsmith there this weekend. And be sure to ask for a "Red Bull and Guinness" if you are at the bar!
