Vinyl Love 11-20

Here's some more of my favourites from my collection

Love all of the Slave album covers too the disco era artwork was always interesting!

"Got a freaky, freaky, freaky, freaky flow control the mic like Fidel Castro"

more vinyl love and more Motown

Grace Jones albums are also always amazing think I have nearly everything she did on wax one of my favourite artists and visually spellbinding to this day

A Tribe Called Quest with arguably the greatest rap album of all time-and an iconic cover!

An always interesting artist with a crazy assed cover!

One of the best DJ's ever to visit Jam was Jazzy Jeff, a good guy too this was some record from back in the day

"It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from goin under"

Public Enemy delivered one of great albums of all time back in 88, which they signed for me nearly 20 years later

Warmed up for this legend a few times and had him over at Jam where he signed this, a great album too

Talking all that Jazz! Hip-hop jazz at it's finest parts 1, 2, 3

"Then cool out to the music cuz it makes ya feel serene"

Best ever use of "Expansions" and they had lyrics to go!
"this jazz contains a new format".......This is one of the best ever defenses of hip-hop for me, "think rap is a fad you must be mad..rap brings back old r&b and if ...we did not people would have forgot..we stand up for the music we live and play"

100% DOPE

A Touch of Jazz

One for the late night crew! A Tribe Called Quest

"My man Ron Carter is on the bass, yeah my man Ron Carter yes he on the bass!"

It's 20 years since i wrote down on a bit of paper for my old lade who was heading to London, a brand new album was out

"A T...ribe Called Quest-Peoples Instinctive Travels and the Paths of rhythm"

She got it too!

The rest is history

This, from the second album, was on heavy rotation in my late teens! My love of jazz grew during this era

My man Ron Carter was on the fucking bass as the greatest hip-hop crew of them all took it deeper than ever-also check for Vinja Mojica on backing vocals!

Rap lyric of the day! A Tribe Called Quest

the whole track is dope really but...

"My rhymes styles be blendin like a Ron G tape
My man where ya goin? You can't escape
When the Tribe is in the house, that means nobody is safe
How can a reverend preach, when a rev can't define
The music of our youth from 1979
We rap about what we see, meaning reality
From people bustin caps and like Mandela bein free
Not every MC be with the negativity
We have a slew of rappers pushin positivity
Hip hop will never die yo, it's all about the rap
So Marion Barry smokin crack, let's preach about that
The trash you talk won't matter, that old bogus chatter
The more that you condemn us, it only makes us phatter
When I talk, I know I'm talkin for hip-hoppers all around
You know you love the sound, we gets down"

One for the late night crew! Minnie Riperton

One of my favourite singers and and a gem from an under-rated album that A Tribe Called Quest rinsed out more than once ("Inside My Love" formed the crucial sample on "Lyrics to Go"). An amazing voice (one of the greatest vocal ranges) and indeed an amazing career, sadly cut short by breast cancer, at the age of only 31. Minnie became a spokesperson for Breast Cancer and helped educate many on the illness before her death. Stevie Wonder, for whom she sang backing vocals with on "Ordinary Pain", was one of the last people to visit her and she was listening to a recording he made her her as she died. The story of the iconic album cover is impressive too (find it on youtube), but the really impressive legacy of Minnie Riperton is her amazing music.

One for the late night crew! Ronnie Foster

More Tribe action from a great album too-even Diplo has got in on the act with Brew Barrymore but of course it is "Electric Relaxation" which is the one here (been hammering non stop since 1993!) The original is amazing I'm sure all the heads will know it.

I've been DJing in Cork since the early 90's in legendary clubnights such as Sweat in Sir Henrys, Mor Disco, Free La Funk, Yo Latino and also Jam and Jam Junior at the Savoy and the Pavilion. I've also held down long term residencies at clubs around Ireland such as Brown Sugar at the Kitchen in Dublin, U-Turn at Ri Ra in Dublin, Jazz Juice at the GPO in Galway, Thompson Garage in Belfast, the Soul Clinic, Dee-Bop, Meltdown and Mo Bounce in Limerick and i've played abroad in the United States and the U.K. on numerous occasions. I also write a music column for the Evening Echo and i'm a regular contributor to the U.K.'s Blues and Soul, the longest running black music magazine in the world. These days i run the Pavilion, a music venue in Cork, which hosts my Jam night every few Fridays http://www.pavilioncork.com also you can catch me at http://djstevieg.podomatic.com
