Rap Lyric of a long hard hip-hop Friday!

Rap Lyric of a long hard hip-hop Friday, dedicated to the Chief Rocka Rob Kelly who played Jam tonight; It was quite but he earned my respect by rocking the show and (arguably more importantly) being a down-to-earth gent (big ups to Mo K too and tanx to Harv)
In a music industry so full of divas and frauds and materialistic no-talent muppets its refreshing to have so many good people in it for the right reasons. Hip-hop is often a parody of itself in 2009 but big ups to the Chief Rockas such as Rob, Flip, Mikki D, and all of the others, you know who you are!
Sometimes supporting stuff like hip-hop here is like knocking your head off a wall but when you meet people who share the love it makes all the hard work worth while-This is for all the hip-hop people in Cork and Ireland and worldwide who love the music!

'I hear a beat I grab the mic, and then I start this workin
The kids around the way used to think that I was buggin
But they don't understand how I feel about the funk
I walk with the funk, I talk with the funk
I eat with the funk, I sleep with the funk... Read More
I live for the funk, I'll die for the funk
So now what do they say, when I'm walkin up the block?
Boom shaka laka there goes the Chief Rocka'

Tune of the day! The Prodigy

Tune of the day-for the junglists i grew up with, especially Colin D, who gets married later today! Congrats man! I'm playing some tunes before these guys during the summer should be fun this was a great reworking of "Chase the Devil"-Check out the comments of the dude who put it up on youtube aswell!

Two for the late night crew! Very different tracks but both classics

One for the late night crew part 1-i'm actually a bit pissed off because I was looking for the Lyn Collins version, which kills it (but give it up for Dionne anyway!

One for the late night crew part 2-Sam Cooke---Music does not get better than this, ever since i heard it back in the day the track has been among my favourites-i highly recommend Peter Guralnicks stellar biography of the soul legend too (and those into their civil rights anthems could do worse than catch Phil Hope spinning tunes some wednesday in the Pav he is a fountain of knowledge-i studied Civil Rights in College and tied it to the music such as this, it is an amazing story and 45 years later it amazing how far we have come in the world--Now if only some countries would catch up!)

Enjoy

Rap lyric of the day-LL Cool J

More love-rap flavours lets hear it for the girl shes from around the way!

"I want a girl with extensions in her hair
Bamboo earrings
At least two pair
A Fendi bag and a bad attitude
That's all I need to get me in a good mood
She can walk with a switch and talk with street slang
I love it when a woman ain't scared to do her thing
Standing at the bus stop sucking on a lollipop
Once she gets pumping its hard to make the hottie stop
She likes to dance to the rap jam
She sweet as brown sugar with the candied yams
Honey coated complexion
Using Camay
Lets hear it for the girl she's from around the way"

Give em the night with the O'Jays

Livin' for the weekend!

I like checking out the blogs!

This article origianlly appeared in yesterdays "Downtown" in Cork's Evening Echo

Blogging has really taken off in the last few years and even though i've been blogging myself for over three years now I have to admit I really only saw how big it had become quite recently. In music blogging has been very influential in promoting both new and old music and it has also raised up some important ethical questions with regard to file sharing too.
Basically, no matter what tune you are looking for can be probably found within minutes on a blog and the record companies and music rights organisations are doing their best to prevent further illegal sharing of music sales that are already in deep decline over recent years. Personally speaking, i have no problems with the blogs that share only out of print music as it encourages people to go and seek out this music and indeed other music from the said artists. Sharing music that is readily available is different however, and I can see the moral argument about why this should be prevented. This is definitely an argument for another day though.
Blogs are a great way of finding music so here are a few of my favourite music ones that I urge you to check out! These are obviously reflective of my own musical tastes but if you find any blog at all that you like go and check out the links and it will surely lead you to more

http://matthewafrica.blogspot.com/

Excellent soul and jazz blog that shows the knowledge of Oakland based blogger Matthew Africa. He has got some serious music on there, always worth a look

http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ontherecord/
Jim Carroll is a music industry veteran in Ireland and i grew up checking out soul and hip-hop articles he wrote for Hot Press, at a time when coverage of hip-hop and soul was pretty scarce. This is an excellent blog that will keep music fans up to date on a broad range of subjects.

http://soul-sides.com

Oliver Wang is a music journalist, sociology professor and DJ who has been writing on pop music, culture, and politics since back in the day. This site is highly respected and I regularly check it out

http://godeeppresents.wordpress.com

Corks very own Greg and Shane are always busy gigging or producing tunes; this is the blog where you will find out exactly what is up, from new releases to Go Deep birthday news.

http://2dopeboyz.okayplayer.com

I've never seen a blog updated so much. All things hip-hop are previewed here, and there are exclusive videos and performances thrown up practically non-stop; not always to my musical taste, but it's great to find fans of quality hip-hop people that are not exclusively stuck in the 1990's

http://beatelectric.blogspot.com

Quality rare disco music with some really informative writing and a serious love of some of the most under-rated music ever released.

http://steviegblog.blogspot.com
Well i have to include my own really! Updated about 3 or 4 times a day you can find all the news here, plus links to my mixes, my tune of the day, a late night chill out tune, some links to my Red Drive features on RedFM, interviews and much much more (I've many Echo articles archived here too)

http://likeathrottle.blogspot.com

DJ Day is a very interesting DJ and producer so as you can imagine his blog is pretty essential! Some wonderful music on here

http://cheebah.typepad.com

This Limerick based blog has been active for ages and features contributions from some of the most knowledgeable music heads in this country, including Shane Curtain and Paul Tarpey.

http://www.chopshop.fm
Another Irish based hip-hop blog that is worth checking. Many of Irelands best soul, hip-hop and funk DJ's have mixes up on this available for free download.

Rap lyric of the day-Eric B and Rakim

Rap lyric of the day-always been a sucka for love-rap numbers, and this is hardly the most vintage Rakim joint but sits nicely over Midnights Starrs "Curious" and i like it a lot

"I seen her in the subway, on my way to Brooklyn
Hello, good looking, is this seat tooken
On the A-train, picking at her brain
I couldn't get her number, I couldn't get her name"

Tune of the day! Solange

Tune of the day---i've posted this before to my blog but i've been singing it all morn so here goes (great album too)

Rap lyric of the day-ATCQ

Rap lyric of the day! Dedicated to J Dilla (RIP) and A Tribe Called Quest

"We livin this cuz it's deep in our bones
A Tribe Called Quest with this hip hop jones
So sit and analyze the lyrical spray
Cuz all it really is is word play"

One for the late night crew! A Carl Craig special

A Carl Craig special---used use two copies of this and chop up the drum breaks toward the end to keep the club vibe going, played it the other night at the Primetime party--at Free La Funk myself and Alan O' Keefe had Mitch (Easy Rider) MCing some wicked jazz freesytling over this in Henrys, i have it on tape somewhere, i really should rip it sometime. Epic

    About Me

    My photo
I'm a DJ from Cork in Ireland. I work with RedFM, presenting Red Drive, The Hitlist and my specialist show, Black on Red. I'm probably best known for being one of the main hip-hop/soul DJ's in Cork and Ireland. I've been DJing in Cork since the early 90's in legendary clubnights such as Sweat in Sir Henrys, Mor Disco, Free La Funk, Yo Latino and also Jam and Jam Junior at the Savoy and the Pavilion. I've also held down long term residencies at clubs around Ireland such as Brown Sugar at the Kitchen in Dublin, U-Turn at Ri Ra in Dublin, Jazz Juice at the GPO in Galway, Thompson Garage in Belfast, the Soul Clinic, Dee-Bop, Meltdown and Mo Bounce in Limerick and i've played abroad in the United States and the U.K. on numerous occasions. I also write a music column for the Evening Echo and i'm a regular contributor to the U.K.'s Blues and Soul, the longest running black music magazine in the world. These days i run the Pavilion, a music venue in Cork, which hosts my Jam night every few Fridays http://www.pavilioncork.com also you can catch me at http://djstevieg.podomatic.com
